Understanding the Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta & Kapha

12 May 2026 · 6 min read · By The Regal Roots Team

Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old science of life, teaches that every person is made up of a unique combination of five elements — space, air, fire, water, and earth — which manifest in the body as three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Vata (air & space) governs movement — breathing, circulation, and the nervous system. People with a dominant Vata constitution tend to be energetic, creative, and quick-thinking, but can be prone to anxiety, dry skin, and irregular digestion when out of balance.

Pitta (fire & water) governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, and intellect. Pitta-dominant individuals are typically sharp, driven, and confident, but excess Pitta can show up as irritability, inflammation, and acidity.

Kapha (earth & water) governs structure — lubrication, stability, and immunity. Kapha types are usually calm, grounded, and nurturing, though imbalance can lead to sluggishness, weight gain, and congestion.

Most people are a combination of two doshas, with one being dominant. Understanding your own constitution is the first step toward choosing the right foods, routines, and herbs — including which Regal Roots formulas will serve you best.
