Eating With the Seasons: An Introduction to Ayurvedic Nutrition

5 March 2026 · 6 min read · By Dr. Anjali Rao, Ayurvedic Consultant

Ayurvedic nutrition isn't a single fixed diet — it's a framework for eating in harmony with the seasons, your dosha, and your digestive strength.

In summer (Pitta season), favour cooling, hydrating foods — cucumbers, melons, coconut, and mint — while reducing spicy, fried, and fermented foods that can aggravate heat in the body.

In autumn and early winter (Vata season), warm, grounding, and slightly oily foods help counter dryness and irregularity — think soups, root vegetables, ghee, and warming spices like ginger and cinnamon.

In late winter and spring (Kapha season), lighter, drier, and more stimulating foods help prevent sluggishness and congestion — favour bitter greens, legumes, and warming teas over heavy dairy and sugar.

A simple starting point: eat your largest meal at midday, favour freshly cooked food over leftovers, and pay attention to how different foods make you feel — your body is always offering feedback.
